Ice Skating Rink
The Shorewood Hills skating rink and Heiden Haus warming house are located on the south end of the Shorewood Hills Elementary School grounds each winter (weather permitting).
The ground must freeze, so it can take an extended period of time (1 or 2 weeks) with day and nighttime temperatures below 20 degrees before ice can be made.
An enclosed hockey rink is set up next to an open skating area. Hockey is not permitted in the open skating area. The rink is lighted for nighttime use.
The Heiden Haus (dedicated to Olympians, and former Village residents, Eric and Beth Heiden) is open until 10:00 pm Sunday through Thursday and until 11:00 pm on Friday & Saturday. The rink is maintained by the Village’s Public Works Crew. It takes several consecutive cold days for the ground to freeze before ice can be made. The rink is flooded late at night and during the weekday mornings as needed. It takes several hours for the ice to become solid enough for skating. A RED flag is flown on the Heiden Haus to indicate that the rink is closed because of new ice or poor conditions due to warm weather. Please keep off the ice during these times to keep the rink in good condition for as long as possible. A GREEN flag flying at the Heiden Haus means the rink is open for skating.
