Village Forester

The Village of Shorewood Hills (population 2376) is seeking applicants for the position of Forester. Shorewood Hills, an inner ring suburb of Madison, WI, is a welcoming and inclusive full-service community that prides itself on being a wonderful place to live, work, play, learn, and visit. The Village places a very high value on its mature urban forest, conservation ecology and environmental sustainability. The Forester is responsible for managing the community forests, parks, public gardens, bio-retention areas and other green spaces. Duties include: tree planting, pruning, and removals; supervising and assisting 1-4 full/part-time staff in daily activities; maintaining an accurate public tree inventory; developing and implementing a community forestry management plan; enforcing Village tree and weed ordinances; coordinating and implementing a regular 5-year rotational street tree pruning program; maintaining the Village’s annual membership in the Arbor Day Foundation’s Tree City USA program; coordinating the Village’s annual Arbor Day celebration; monitoring for pests and pathogens in the Village tree canopy; monitoring and removal of noxious weeds and woody invasive species; consulting with utilities, contractors, volunteer organizations, and municipal staff on projects that impact public trees; preparing regular forestry reports for the Village Parks Committee; providing private tree consultations and informational materials for Village residents. Ecological restoration, tree and plant identification and integrated pest management skills are important to the position.

Requirements include a bachelor’s degree in urban forestry or related field from an accredited college and three years of technical work experience directly related to urban forestry and horticulture/landscaping. Supervisory experience is preferred but not required. Arborist certification by the International Society of Arboriculture is strongly preferred and will be considered favorably during the hiring process. This position requires the ability to work independently and the skills to work well with residents and other community partners. Some evening and weekend work is required. This is an exempt salaried position, and the starting salary will be $53,040 - $60,528 DOQ.
