Shorewood Hills Police Department

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Sorry, there are no current vacancies with the department.

 DEPARTMENT SYNOPSIS

The Shorewood Hills Police Department consists of 16 sworn Police Officers, ten of which are considered part-time.  In addition, two Administrative Assistants and one non-sworn Community Service Officer (CSO) are also employed.  The department provides 24-hour police protection to the Village of Shorewood Hills, which is situated on Madison’s central west side.

Full-time officers operate on a “6-3” rotation and work one of three daily shifts.  The “A” shift is from 7 am to 3 pm, followed by the “B” shift, which is 3 pm to 11 pm.  Finally, the “C” shift is from 11 pm – 7 am.  Officers are generally assigned a permanent shift, however, one full-time officer is assigned to a swing shift.

One of our department’s primary focuses is on traffic enforcement.  In particular, arrests for Operating a Motor Vehicle While Intoxicated (OWI) are very frequent.  In 2004 the department arrested more than 195 individuals for the offense, a statistic which rivals much larger area departments.

In addition to traffic, officers are available to respond to a variety of other calls.  Our department is dispatched through the Dane County 911 Center, which also dispatches the Madison Police Department and many other agencies in Dane County.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Upon the initiation of a full-time hiring process, notice will be posted on this website, as well as the following locations: Wisconsin State Journal, Law Enforcement Bulletin, Department of Justice Website (WILENET), and the Village of Shorewood Hills Bulletin.

The department will accept applications for approximately two months.  Following the deadline, the applications will be screened by the Chief of Police and Lieutenant.  A select group of applicants will then be invited for a panel interview.

The interview panel consists of approximately five persons, including both Police Officers and non-sworn members of the community.  Each candidate will be asked the same series of questions.  Following the interview, candidates will take a written test.  The written exam is an in-house test that consists of multiple choice, short answer and essay questions.  Each candidate must take the written exam.

A small group of final candidates will be invited back for a second interview with the Chief of Police and Village Administrator.  A stringent background investigation will also be conducted on each of the finalists.  Following the second interview the candidates will be ranked.  The top candidate will then be recommended to the Personnel Committee and approved by the Village Board for hire.  The other remaining candidates will be placed on an eligibility list, which will be kept on file for possible future vacancies.

Pending successful completion of the background investigation, physical and psychological examinations, the top candidate shall receive a conditional offer of employment.

Upon being hired, officers are subject to a twelve (12) month probationary period, which may be extended at the discretion of the Chief of Police.
