Anthracnose
Anthracnose has been a prominent disorder on oak trees (mainly white) throughout Shorewood Hills. In the Lake States, this disease can be more severe due to the unique climate favoring disease development.
Control of Oak Anthracnose
Raking leaves in the fall and the pruning of dead, dying, and diseased branches will reduce chances of infection the following year.
Crown thinning or selective pruning will reduce the relative humidity in the crown. Moisture in the air promotes infection so pruning should be done in dry weather.
When watering, avoid wetting the crown of the tree.
General Care to Improve Tree Health
Water trees during dry spells. Infrequent, but deep soakings in the morning hours are best.
Use organic or living mulch around the base of your trees.
Avoid unnecessary excavating, grading, soil compaction, or root cutting.
