Garbage Disposals

In an effort to keep trash out of the landfills, the Village has a long history of being in the Garbage Disposal business.  Almost all of the homes in the Village have garbage disposals that were installed and maintained by the Village Crew.

The Village uses the In-Sink-Erator brand and has two models in stock.  Model 17 is a batch feed disposal where you put the stopper into drain to turn it on.  It sells for $255.00.  Model 777ss requires a wall switch and sells for $200.00.

You may purchase a disposal from the Village and put it in yourself, hire a contractor to put it in, or the Crew can install it for you.  The Crew charges about $60-70 to install a garbage disposal depending on parts and labor.

Trouble Shooting

Our garbage disposal has given us all a little trouble from time to time. If your disposal is in need of repair or maintenance, call the Village Hall.  The Crew does service calls during their regular hours (M-F/7-3) and bills for parts and labor.

Before you call, take a look at some helpful hints that may save you a service call when your disposal is not working.

"My disposal will not grind? It doesn’t make any noise at all?" -- It may have become unplugged. Try pressing the RESET button on the bottom of the disposal. It may have popped out. The eraser end of a pencil may help you in pushing in the RESET button. Also, the circuit breaker for the disposal may have tripped. Turn the breaker off and then back on to be sure.

"My disposal will not grind but it does make noise?" -- Most likely the cutter head needs to be turned. UNPLUG the disposal. The In-Sink-Erator brand comes with an Allen wrench that fits into a socket at the bottom center of the disposal (under the sink). You can then turn the cutter head back and forth.

For older Maytag units you need to use a plunger handle (or something similar) to spin the cutter head from the topside.

Remove the wrench or handle, look into the disposal, remove any objects that should not be in there. Put a little dish soap in the disposal, plug it in, turn it on, if it spins turn the water on.

"My disposal will not drain?" -- Many times the trap just beyond the disposal is plugged. Try a plunger.

If you still can't get your disposal working call John Mitmoen at the Village Hall (267-2680)
